Thesis 1: The Paint Shop Is Verification
Build the expensive building first: verification is the capital investment the whole line exists to feed.
In Toyota’s plant, the paint shop is the most expensive and most environmentally sensitive building — clean-room conditions, extensive air handling, the largest capital line item. The plant is designed around it.
Ask where that building stands in an agent factory and intuition answers wrong. Intuition says the expensive part is the line: assembly tooling, orchestration, agent scaffolding. The factory’s own production data says otherwise. On the pilot line, assembling a working unit takes 49 seconds and $0.37 — and the testing that follows finds both of that unit’s real bugs. Assembly is nearly free and infinitely parallel. The scarce, expensive, contamination-sensitive process — the one that needs the clean room — is verification.
The design consequence is a capital-allocation inversion: most of the factory, by invested effort, is the verification shop. The line is cheap; the gauges are the plant. A factory that can assemble 100 agents a day and verify 2 is a 2-agent-a-day factory with a WIP problem.
